Our Founding Partner Richard Izard has passed away

It is with a heavy heart that we share news of the passing of Richard Izard, 2 January 2024. Richard has held so many roles in his life it is difficult to know where to start in remembering the man who came to be our most vigorous supporter. Richard believed in the vision of The NZ Liberation Museum – Te Arawhata so completely. Such collaborations are rare.

We must first acknowledge the huge loss this is to Richard’s family and friends. They will be grieving right now, but in time hopefully, they can celebrate his life with charm and good humour – two of Richard’s most distinctive characteristics.

Sir Don McKinnon and Jenni Giblin, from our team at the museum had a very close relationship with Richard. They never failed to return from a visit with Richard re-charged for the project, and just happy to have been in his company. They will feel the loss keenly, as will many who knew Richard.

Richard wasn’t able to be present at the opening of the museum in October last year, and sent a video message to the hundreds of people gathered.  His speech got the laughs, and brought sincere emotion to proceedings– letting us in on his plans to visit Le Quesnoy for Anzac Day celebrations this year.  He will be missed.
